  • 5 Incredible Reasons To Use Citronella

0 comments / Posted on by Maeva Candles

The latest addition to The Maeva Store- Citronella candles have raised some eyebrows. It almost sounds gimmicky, candles which can ward off mosquitoes?

The truth is that citronella has a rich historical usage with it being used thousands of years ago in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and China to lower inflammation, fight infection, relieve pain and more. Maeva candles use citronella essential oil, a more potent form than the plant which is extracted by steam distilling the leaves and stems of two varieties of the Asian grass plant citronella, Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon Winterianus. Citronella is also a distant relative of Lemongrass, hence the slight citrusy scent.

Today citronella is used in the form of essential oils for aromatherapy or topical use, in sprays, a component of candles, lotions and even cosmetic products.

Citronella essential oil is one of the most common aromatherapy oils and is part of what gives many household sprays and candles their signature scent. Here are some accepted uses of this miracle plant:

    Inhibits Bacterial Growth

Before the advent of modern medicine, the plant was used to curb bacterial growth, treat infectious wounds as it has components of methyl isoeugenol which are responsible for this property.

    Fights Depression

A common aromatherapy ingredient, the fresh citrusy scent is said to fight depression and help alleviate feelings of anxiety, sadness, and negativity. It is also used in diffusers at night in many countries as it encourages sleep.

    Great For The Skin

Because citronella essential oil has antibacterial properties, it is extremely effective against acne-causing bacteria when applied topically. It is very good at reducing sebum buildup and drying down oily skin when used in a combination with witch hazel, tea tree and other oils in small quantities.

    Removes Bad Odours

It's not difficult to see why this essential oil is a staple of many deodorants, body sprays and air fresheners! The crisp, rich lemon-like aroma of this oil is universally liked and it's power to replace bad odours makes it a favourite among fragrance lovers everywhere. An added advantage is that citronella is completely natural and free from  harmful chemicals found in mainstream deodorants, such as parabens, aluminum, and propylene glycol.

    Insect Repellant

One of the most famed used of the citronella plant is its ability to keep away insects and mosquitoes. They masks scents that mosquitoes are attracted to such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid thus warding off mosquitoes when diffused or lit in citronella-infused candles.

We at Maeva knew we had to incorporate citronella into our collection thus we infused reusable clay pots with potent citronella essential oil plus a quirky dust-cover on top! Our motive was to create something with incredible utility but also an attractive visual appeal, so head over to our collection and do give us feedback on our attempt.

  • Here's Why Tuberose Is Our Bestselling Fragrance Of The Month

1 comment / Posted on by Tanya Kumbhat

Despite it's name, Tuberose is no relation to the mighty rose. Tuberose is a night-blooming white flower distinguished by its swollen, tuberous roots. An ingredient for off-beat perfumes, tuberose is also used as wedding or funeral flowers in many cultures.

When Maeva chose Tuberose for its wedding collection, we heard some skeptical voices as weddings flowers are usually roses, tulips lillis or peonys! Also what's a tuberose ? (It is rajnigandha in Hindi.) We stuck to our guns and went ahead as we simply loved the complex lush, cool almost exotic note that when put into emotions is sweet, heady and seductive. And you our beloved customers have proved us right by buying so much of it to make tuberose the fragrance of the month.

    Intrigue and Mystery

Thomas Moore writes in his oriental poem 'Lalla Rookh'

The Tube-rose with her silvery light,

That is in the gardens of Malay

Is called The Mistress of the Night

So like a bride, scented and bright

She comes out when the sun's away.

The tuberose has been a symbol of love and lust since ages past despite not having the visual appeal of orchids or roses. Described as heady, even narcotic, the famed perfumer Roja Dove called tuberose the 'harlot of perfumery.'  It is also said that the Victorians forbade young girls to inhale the odour of tuberose for fear they might have get lured to give into passions!

    It's all in their chemistry

The flower contains high qualities of 'lactones' buttery-smelling molecules which is also produced by our scalp. They also contain 'indole' which is the smell associated with human bodies and human intimacy. All these components explain why the smell of the tuberose flower seem familiar to us; flowers are the reproductive product of plants, so of course we would be attracted by human similarities to the  composition of these  flowers.

    Florals are ubiquitous

Everyone loves a good floral scent whether it is in perfumes, air fresheners, soap, candles and more. We're sure that people will continue to love florals for as long as they exist but it is also true that people like to be surprised. Tuberose is the answer to those looking to veer beyond the floral scents as it isn't sweet and cloying but is clear and sharp that gives it more of an edge. So for those who dislike florals-tuberose is the way to go.

    First Impressions

As astounding as this fragrance is, human beings are visual creatures first and this is where we spend days picking out, experimenting, discarding and developing!  Befitting the scent of the tuberose, Maeva has breath-taking cloches, silvery crackled mercury glasses, intricately designed bell jars, eye-catching silver lacquer pillars and delicate glass jars to present you the perfect wedding candle. A delight to look at and to smell, our vintage cloches, big tins and jar candles are wedding gifts begging to be given while our silver pillars and tea light holders are just beautiful to add to the decor of magical weddings.

As we said before, our Mr and Mrs wedding candles are flying off our virtual shelves! Head over to https://www.themaevastore.com/collections/wedding to get this sultry beauty to you today.

  • 10 Terms You Need To Know If You Are A Candle Newbie

1 comment / Posted on by Maeva Candles

There’s a lot of science behind the illumination and fragrance of a lighted candle.  A perfect candle is the result of the right combination of candle wax, burn, wicks, dyes and fragrance.

Here are some terms related to the making of candles that will turn you from a candle newbie to a candle connoisseur.

    Burn Rate:

A candle's burn rate is the amount of wax consumed per hour in grams. This primarily depends on the quality of the wax and wick used. A candle's burn rate is affected by factors such as exposure to draft and heat, neglect in trimming the wick, leaving the candle burning longer than necessary and some environmental factors.

    Burn Time:

The total amount of time it takes for a candle to burn to completion is the burn time.

    Cold Throw:

A term used to describe the strength of the scent before the candle is lit for the first time. This is important as as the cold throw is the first impression of the candle, you're likely to buy it only if the first scent catches your attention. As anyone passing by our offices can vouch for!

    Flash Point:

This is the lowest temperature at which wax or fragrance oil of a candle can ignite. For wax it is the temperature at which it combusts and catches fire. For fragrance is the temperature it must reach in order to catch fire when coming in to contact with a spark or an open flame.

    Fragrance Load

The amount of fragrance used per the amount of wax. A fragrance load of the range 6-10% is most common. If a candle adds more than the recommended amount, the fragrance oil can separate itself from the wax and seep, creating oily spots.

    Gutter

This refers to the wax that has melted and run down the outside of the candle. This can happen when the wax being consumed by the flame is more than the wick can effectively absorb.

Hot Throw (also known as Warm Throw and Scent Throw):

A term used to describe the strength of a fragrance while the candle is burning.  To evaluate the hot throw of a candle, it needs to be burnt for at least 2 hours but not more than 4 hours. The star of Maeva candles, a long-lasting and desirable strength is what  keeps customers coming back for more!

    Melt Pool

The liquid layer of wax that forms on the surface of the candle around the wick as the candle burns. A full melt pool should be 1/8 to 1/4 inches deep which will allow the fragrance to disperse more thoroughly into the room.

    Power Burn

A power burn happens when you burn a candle for more than 8 hours. Such a long period of burn is has a lot of associated risks and is generally not recommended.

    Wet Spots:

This is when the wax pulled away from the glass, giving an appearance of a patchy "wet" spots. These spots are caused by shrinkage and air bubbles that occur as the wax is cooling inside the container. This issue does not affect the candle's performance in any way and Maeva's talented work-force ensures that this is minimized in our candles.
